André 3000 will be dropping a new album this Friday called New Blue Sun, his first official solo album. But the LP isn’t what some people might think.

Simply, because it’s an instrumental album, and André won’t be rapping or singing on it, just playing the flute.

He spoke about the album with NPR and explained why it won’t have any vocals.

“So, in these times, it just comes harder for me to do it and I don’t know why,” said André about writing lyrics. “I mean I try it all the time. It’s not like I don’t try or it’s not like I have a lot of these songs just sitting — I have songs but it’s not like rap things that I really feel happy about sharing. And really, that’s the most important part. I have to feel happy about sharing it.”

Some of the song titles on the new album are lengthy. One of them, for example, is “I swear, I Really Wanted To Make A Rap Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time.”

The last full-on project from André was with OutKast, 2006’s Idlewild. Since then, he’s been considered a recluse.

Are you excited about the instrumental album?
