HBO shares a gripping first-look at an upcoming documentary on the life and trials of a rock & roll royal.

A few weeks back, HBO announced a documentary treatment on the incomparable Tina Turner.

Aptly titled, TINA, the film was cut from hundreds of hours of archival home, concert, and interview footage with the rock & roll royal, as well as testimonies from Oprah, former MTV journalist, Kurt Loder (who co-authored the singer’s autobiography, I, Tina: My Life Story,) and Angela Bassett (who was nominated for a Grammy for her portrayal of Turner in the 1994 biopic, What’s Love Got to Do With It.)

And now, the film’s gripping official trailer has arrived. “Look what I have done in this lifetime, with this body,” says Turner in the teaser as photos and footage from her mercurial career flash across the screen. “I’m a girl from a cotton field. I pulled myself above what was not taught to me,” Turner goes on in a segment from a newer interview with the singer, who notably left a public life behind when she married a German record executive and took permanent residence in Switzerland in the mid-90s after a storied streak of commercial success that dates back to the early-60s.

The singer began her career with a string of hits with ex-husband, Ike Turner, with whom she’d had a notoriously abusive relationship. The couple divorced in the mid-70s, with Tina taking songwriting royalties for songs she’d penned and Ike taking publishing rights to songs composed by both of them. The singer struggled to pay bills and debts for years after the split, forcing her to play small clubs until she could record an album that charted. Turner’s hit a new stride in 1984 with the release of Private Dancer. Anchored by the iconic single “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” the album went 5x platinum and was nominated for a number of Grammys, including “Record of The Year,” “Song of The Year,” and “Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.”
