The release features Reason reflecting on his anxieties, his fears and moving forward as he’s staked his claim in the industry.
TDE’s Reason has emerged to offer up his latest project, New Beginnings, it follows the arrival of numerous singles throughout 2020.
The new release features appearances by his TDE labelmates Schoolboy Q, Isaiah Rashad and Ab-Soul. The features don’t stop there, Reason also enlists Vince Staples, J.I.D., Rapsody, Mereba and Alemeda to assist with crafting the project.
The compilation is guttural, on it, Reason weaves stories exploring what’s been on his mind including fears, anxieties, and doubts. New Beginnings is all about the Carson, California rapper staking his claim as a bright young star within the ranks of TDE. The release also presents him as a staunch lyricist committed to his craft.
Speaking on the project, Reason says, “New Beginnings is [about] dying and coming back alive.” He adds it also touches on “anything else holding you back from doing something great.”
After a first-listen, we decided that our favorite tracks are “Show Stop,” “Favorite Nigga,” “Fall,” “Slow Down” with Alemeda, “Flick It Up” featuring Ab-Soul. “Show Stop” is a catchy track, while “Favorite Nigga” allows him the space to get a bit boastful.
“Fall” is a reflective, soulful song touching on the ups and downs of making it inside the creative industry. It was almost hard to not get emotionally invested as Reason appears to be telling a story that he’s all too familiar with.
On “Slow Down,” another track shaped by a cutting narrative, he pivots and touches on losing a child, his past struggles with addiction and more. Alemeda’s vocals are a stunningly fitting addition to the track. “Slow Down” also expands on why artists should stop and dwell on their successes. Honorable mentions: “Westside” featuring the vocals of Mereba and “Windows Cry.”
New Beginnings is all about the patience that’s necessary when one is following their dreams. Despite Reason’s breakthrough moment being far gone, his latest work speaks for his ability to remain consistent. He’s a lyricist through and through, this compilation is smooth, and an easy listen as the world still copes with the ongoing pandemic.
