Macklemore’s The Heist notoriously defeated Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid M.A.A.D City for best rap album at the 2014 Grammys.

Then Macklemore made the situation even more awkward by posting a text he sent to Kendrick in which he says it sucks that he “robbed” him.

When asked about it, Kendrick said that he thought Mack is a “good dude” but added that the posting was “uncalled for”.

In a new interview, Macklemore explained that he was going through a lot at the time.

“I was actually detoxing from drugs during the Grammys,” he told Jay Shetty. “I was maybe three or four days off of opiates and it definitely was not out of my system whatsoever. So that place of fear was still there. And I remember winning the four Grammys, and at the afterparty, got a pill from somebody. And that was the beginning of another attempt to escape everything that was happening.”

Macklemore is been very vocal about his struggle to stay sober.
