De La Soul recruits Styles P, Talib Kweli, and more for the election season anthem.
With Election Day just days away, De La Soul has released a new track inspired by the upcoming battle. The group called along Styles P, Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Mysonne, and Chuck D for the anti-trump anthem “Remove 45.”
“When it comes to this president and his administration,” De La’s Posdnuos said in a statement, “we need to exercise our right to vote and remove him from office.”
The last time we got a full-length project from De La Soul was the last election year, when the group dropped the crowdfunded And The Anonymous Nobody. The project featured production from DJ Premier and Pete Rock. The group is in the process of recording a follow-up to that album.
Last year, De La teamed up with DJ Shadow for “Rocket Fuel.” The track, which plays on conspiracy theories that the moon landing was fake, appeared on Shadow’s sixth album Our Pathetic Age.
The last we heard regarding De La, Rostrum Records’ Benjy Grimberg was attempting to assist in negotiations to get the group their masters back. The group’s catalog cannot be found on streaming platforms due to disputes regarding sample clearances with Tommy Boy Records. According to DJ Maseo, the label’s former president assured him the clearances were handled informally. However, after the label was acquired by Warner Bros. Tommy Boy lost its catalog due to debt.
