“Ex for a Reason” is the first single from Summer Walker’s upcoming album Still Over It.

Summer Walker has returned to release her newest single “Ex for a Reason” featuring City Girls rapper JT.

The track is the first for her highly anticipated sophomore album Still Over It slated to drop next month. The LVRN signee has been teasing the follow-up to her well-received debut for the last few weeks, most recently she launched a dedicated Instagram account to the hard drive being used for the album. She even dropped a clip featuring JT alluding to the new single, days before that she announced her album from a parking lot after saying she wasn’t able to attend the BET Hip Hop Awards due to their COVID mandate (she’s not vaccinated).

Additionally, she’s also unveiled the 20-song tracklist for the upcoming album along with dates next to each song slot. Justice Baiden, co-founder and Head of A&R at LVRN shared a bit on the dates on Twitter. “For those asking – the timeline is a reference to where summer was emotionally when we were working- the album is a journey of her life – context is important to these song meanings.” Tiny note: Lil Durk, Ari Lennox, and SZA have been confirmed as features on the album.

“Ex for a Reason” is an uptempo track written by Sean Garrett and Nija Charles that centers on the emotions behind dating someone that’s moved on from a past relationship. Summer’s sweet spot is divulging her inner thoughts on dating and toxic relationships so it makes sense that her first single addresses a breakup. Interestingly enough, JT adds something unique to the track, it’s a bit different in comparison to Walker’s previous work, but it’s effective.

Over It, Summer’s last full length which was released in 2019 did extremely well. It’s clear her latest single is a preview of what’s to come in November.

Listen to “Ex for a Reason” featuring JT below. Still Over It drops on November 5.
