Latto Touches on Her Official Name Change on New Single “The Biggest”
“The Biggest” feels like a moment for the rapper. Latto is centering her own narrative and isn’t allowing anyone else to take control of it.
Latto has officially changed her rap name and addressed the controversy surrounding it.
Late Friday evening, after a bit of teasing, the Atlanta rapper dropped a new track, “The Biggest.” Though the song touches on exactly why she decided to opt for a name change, she also expresses that she doesn’t think it will put an end to the issues fans and naysayers have with her.
A few lines where she describes this: “Misunderstood so I made it official/Changed the name, watch them still make it an issue,” Latto raps. “Big Latto, bitch, ain’t nothin’ ‘bout me little/Let me show you bitches how to ball when all odds against you.”
Another distinct line in the track: “Now I see the big deal/How you choose a name like that when your people getting killed?” This addresses the notion that she once wanted to silence naysayers, but now that she’s older she is working towards shedding that energy.
As for why she embraced the term “Mulatto” or “Miss Mulatto” which is deemed problematic, Latto has shared that she was attempting to reclaim the word. In a past HipHopDX interview, she also stated that she has thought about switching her stage name. “It is a controversy that I hear and see every day as far as my name goes, so I would be lying to say no I never thought of that,” she said.
“My intentions was to never glorify being mulatto.’ So if that’s how it’s being perceived, like people think I’m saying I’m better because I’m mulatto or my personality trait is mulatto,” she previously shared in a Hot Freestyles interview. “That’s how they’re taking it. So if that’s not my intentions then I need to change the matter at hand, which is the name change.”
