Elucid on His Artistic Evolution and Essential Records

In the wake of his latest collaborative project with producer Sebb Bash, I Guess U Had to Be There, the avant-garde rapper Elucid has taken a moment to reflect on the trajectory of his career. The creative chemistry between the two artists, which began through digital correspondence, culminated in a tangible, in-person recording session in Switzerland. This collaboration, which also spawned the vinyl-only EP 48 Hours, highlights a unique synergy where Bash’s retro-future production style meets Elucid’s dense, intricate lyricism.

Elucid, widely recognized for his work as one half of the duo Armand Hammer alongside billy woods, has maintained a prolific output. While Armand Hammer continues to push boundaries—with their recent work with The Alchemist and beyond—Elucid’s solo catalog remains a testament to his unpredictable and deeply personal artistic vision.

Elucid

Reflecting on his 2016 release Save Yourself, Elucid describes the album as a pivotal moment of self-determination. It served as a declaration of independence from the religious upbringing that shaped his youth. He notes that while the influence of the church is difficult to fully escape, he has sought to redefine the concept of community, viewing it as a gathering of like-minded individuals working toward collective change rather than a rigid institution.

The 2022 album I Told Bessie emerged from a deeply personal place, catalyzed by the discovery of old family photographs. Elucid explains that the title and the thematic core of the record crystallized only after he connected the music to his late grandmother. This process of discovery underscores his belief in the “magic quality of art”—the way intention and memory can coalesce to create something that feels both inevitable and profound.

His 2024 release, REVELATOR, captured a different energy entirely. Born from a period of intense frustration and global uncertainty, the album is characterized by its raw, stormy textures. Elucid finds the live performance of these tracks, particularly “RFID” and “The World Is Dog,” to be a cathartic experience, noting that the visceral power of drums, bass, and noise resonates deeply with his audiences.

Finally, INTERFERENCE PATTERN, also released in 2024, marks a shift toward a more adventurous, collaborative sound. By incorporating live musicians and exploring diverse instrumentation, Elucid continues to evolve, proving that his creative curiosity remains as sharp as ever. Whether through the lens of his solo work or his collaborative efforts, Elucid remains a vital voice in modern hip-hop, constantly interrogating the world around him with uncompromising honesty.
