D Smoke Drops New Single “Sade” Paying Homage to Soul Singer
D Smoke’s new singles released exclusively on Spotify ahead of the 63rd Grammy Awards. The Inglewood rapper is nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Album.
D Smoke who rapped his way into the hearts of Americans on Netflix’s Rhythm + Flow has released two new singles. One is an homage to soul singer Sade and is named after the songbird. The other is a remix to his successful single “Gaspar Yanga” off of his Grammy-nominated album Black Habits.
Exclusively streaming on Spotify, “Sade” is equipped with an airy vibe. In the song, D Smoke shares, “Music takes people to another world … music you’re my only wife.” Besides being a tribute to Sade, the single also highlights her winning Best New Artist at the 1986 Grammys.
“Gaspar Yanga (Remix)” has an uptempo vibe and D Smoke’s commanding bars are the main attraction throughout the single. Snoop Dogg effortlessly floats over the bass-heavy beat. The rappers feed off of one another’s energy on this energetic remix. In comparison to the original cut, the updated version has a bit of a funkier vibe.
D Smoke on the background of his Spotify Singles:
“I’m proud to put out two songs on the same day that represent both sides of me. ‘Gaspar Yanga (Remix)’ with its warrior-chant sound and aggressive language, pays homage to the Afro-Latino liberator by the same name, who successfully led a revolution, while ‘Sade’ speaks to the complexities of love and artistry. These songs together serve as a 1-2 punch from the heart of Inglewood.”
You’ve probably already heard D Smoke has not one but two Grammy noms this year. In addition to being nominated for Best Rap Album, he also received a nod for Best New Artist.
As for what the Inglewood rapper felt after he was nominated, in an Okayplayer interview he candidly shared: “To get recognized for something that is that close to home and personal is really dope.” He added, “I was cool with the people feeling it and being moved by something that is that real to my upbringing, let alone getting the type of recognition that, in some people’s minds, validates it.”
We’re rooting for the Inglewood rapper to take home at least one award from Music’s Biggest Night. Listen to his Spotify Singles below.
