From their new album No Fear of Time, releasing May 3rd, Black Star recruits Black Thought and Madlib on lead single “Mineral Mountain.”

Black Star has reconnected, and they’ve brought Black Thought and Madlib along for the ride. The duo, comprised of Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and Talib Kweli, joins Black Thought with production from Madlib on new single “Mineral Mountain” from their upcoming sophomore album No Fear of Time.

Last week, the duo confirmed that No Fear of Time will release on May 3rd exclusively on podcast platform Luminary, where Bey and Kweli co-host podcast The Midnight Miracle with Dave Chappelle. Last May, the duo released a surprise track towards the end of The Midnight Miracle episode “Gladiator Circus World.”

No Fear of Time will be Bey and Kweli’s second album in nearly 24 years, following their 1998 debut Mos Def and Talib Kweli Are Black Star. Like their new album, “Mineral Mountain” can only be heard on Luminary, but there’s a preview of the track below.

Kweli explained the process behind No Fear of Time in a recent press statement.

“About 3-4 years ago I was visiting Yasiin in Europe and we started to talk about songs to do on an album, so I flew an engineer out just to see what that would be,” Kweli said. “Once I realized this conversation is starting to organically become a creative conversation, I started making sure to have the engineer around at all times. There was one day we were just in a hotel listening to Madlib beats, and he’s like ‘Play that Madlib tape again.’ I’m playing the beats and he starts doing rhymes to the beats. And that’s how we did the first song.”

Kweli added, “This is very similar to how we did the first album. But the first album, there were no mobile studios. This entire album, we have not set foot in one recording studio. It’s all been done in hotel rooms and backstage at Dave Chappelle shows.”

No Fear of Time releases on May 3rd.
