E-40 and Too Short joined The Breakfast Club on Monday morning.

On Sunday night, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz announced that E-40 and Too Short would face off in the latest Verzuz battle. In the wake of Ashanti and Keyshia Cole’s battle being postponed, the two Bay Area titans stepped in. On Monday, they joined The Breakfast Club to speak on how the battle came together. Watch the full interview below.

“We would’ve [done] it a little earlier, but I was resisting at first,” Short said. “40 wasn’t really into it…we’re cool as f—. It seems like it was a war, where you gotta go against [your opponent] and talk bad, we thought it through like, “let’s do it for the Bay, because we basically are the foundation, where it started.”

Too Short got his start in 1983 with the LP Don’t Stop Rappin, while E-40 debuted in 1990 as a member of Tha Click. To date, the two hold a combined seven platinum albums and nine gold albums. In 2012, the two collaborated for the album History: Mob Music.

“We knew each other B.R.,” 40 explained. “Before Rap. We knew each other from the soil and the traffic, so it only made sense. So many people [were] hitting us about Verzuz, they were like ‘man we need to see you and Short, that would be the ultimate one for us.”

In the video, 40 teased the fact that they’ve been working on another collaborative album. E-40 revealed that Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube are involved.

“Long story short, we made a lot of songs. It ain’t really definite what it’s going to be, but it’s going to be something. It’s just a lot of songs. Everybody’s got studios and facilities…I feel like we’re doing this for hip-hop. [None of us] need the bag.”
