D’Angelo delivered a blistering live take of his contribution to the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.

Earlier this week, Rockstar Games announced D’Angelo would be making a special appearance at a live performance of the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack.

Hosted by Tribeca Games, the show was lead by composer, Daniel Lanois, and featured a number of the soundtrack’s contributors, including, of course, the r&b icon, whose first song in six years, “Unshaken,” appeared on the revered game score. T

The event took place on Thursday, June 10th, in NYC’s Battery Park as a part of the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, but almost instantly sold out. However, one attendee captured the set from the crowd, offering a glimpse at a blistering live take of “Unshaken” (and D’s first show with a band in three years.) The clip opens up with nearly three minutes of white-knuckled blues from Jesse Johnson (former guitarist for The Time and current member of D’Angelo’s touring band, The Vanguard,) before the Soulquarian singer joins him at the top of the stage in a fitting dueling funk cowboy motif.

Not one known for his public appearances, the set was another surprising resurfacing of a notoriously reclusive musician. Earlier this year, D’Angelo came out of hiding as the first Verzuz guest who didn’t square up with another artist. Rather than going head-to-head with a contemporary, the live-steam platform focused on D’Angelo’s collaborative spirit, wrangling cameos from H.E.R., Method Man, and Redman, and Keyon Harrold, who played sideman to D early on in the set as he debuted a new song live on the Verzuz Valentine’s Day special. No word on whether that song will ever get an official release.
