The TDE producer and engineer also offered updates on forthcoming projects from SZA and Kendrick Lamar.

Last year, MixedByAli acquired the keys to the former recording facility of the iconic west coast rap label, Death Row Records. Can-Am Recorders, the notorious southwest Hollywood studio where Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac, recorded and mixed their respective hall-of-fame albums, is now NoName Studios. And the Top Dawg Entertainment engineer is already pulling back the curtain on some of his recent renovations to the space.

In a recent interview with Complex, MixedByAli offered a brief mid-facelift tour of NoName, taking us into the adopted headquarters of TDE. “This is really the old Death Row Studios. This is the music I was raised off. This is the music that inspired me to be who I am today,” Ali says as he guides the crew through wooded rooms and halls of the studio. The TDE engineer also reveals he’s planning to build memorials to both Nipsey Hussle and Mac Miller in one of the studio’s corridors.

Elsewhere in the interview, the engineer recalls his first encounters with Kendrick Lamar and the TDE team, as well as some of the frat-house antics from his days in the label’s bunker. While he wouldn’t put a date (or any details, really) to the next Kendrick album, the engineer does confirm fans can expect another new palette of sounds from the rap giant. But when asked for an update on the next SZA album, Ali was less cryptic. “She’s still working with the internal camp trying to finalize piece here and there, trying to finalize records. When finalizing an album there’s a lot of waiting for verses, waiting for production parts,” the engineer says.
