The singers are set to square off on December 12 at 8 pm ET.

2020 has received another blessing from Verzuz, Keyshia Cole and Ashanti are the latest duo the music platform chosen for their next battle.

It’s evident from this matchup that Swizz Beats and Timbaland have been taking their time to figure out which R&B figures would be the right follow-up to Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott. Cole and Ashanti are a perfect fit.

We’re expecting Cole, a California-bred singer to throw out a few of her big hits from her 2005 debut The Way It Is: “I Should’ve Cheated and “Love.” Beyond these two deep cuts, “Fallin’ Out,” and “Let It Go” featuring Missy Elliot and Lil Kim from her 2007 album Just Like You are additional tracks that speak to her vocal range. One sleeper in her arsenal is “Playa Cards Right” featuring Tupac (we won’t sleep the night of the battle if she doesn’t play this).

Long Island, New York’s Ashanti will be stiff competition (she’s from Glen Cove if you are into that type of thing). Her self-titled debut ushered in her as R&B royalty. That album is equipped with songs that speak to that time period in the music industry: “Foolish,” “Happy,” and “Baby.” The buck doesn’t stop here, during the Verzuz, “Rock Wit U (Awww Baby)” will most likely ring off. “Rain On Me” is a sneaky cut that still stands the test of time.

Both Keyshia Cole and Ashanti are still upheld in the R&B canon. Similar to Monica and Brandy, these two have tracks that set a precedent for the music that is currently topping Billboard’s charts. We’re hoping both singers serve up their biggest songs alongside tracks that are slept on.

The Keyshia Cole vs. Ashanti Verzuz battle is slated for December 12 at 8 pm ET. You can tune in via Apple Music or on the official Verzuz Instagram account.
