Southside Richmond, Virginia-bred rapper Peter $un returns to reveal his debut album Scumbaby. The release is an introspective exploration of rap fused with jazz and soul.
Throughout Scumbaby, $un’s growth as an artist over the years becomes evident. Over the course of 15 tracks there’s an air of empowerment heard on many of the songs and his talent is undeniable.
The core of the album centers around an upbeat feeling which is highly necessary for the past seven months the U.S. has been coping with. What’s interesting about today’s release is the fact that $un began recording Scumbaby in 2018, but the overall sound of the compilation still feels fitting for right now.
When asked what inspired him to drop this album, he shared, “I was inspired by life, I don’t usually write anything if I don’t have anything good to contribute.” He also expanded on this by noting, “I’m usually inspired by my situations and the situations people around me are going through.”
Raised in projects in the Southside of Richmond, $un believes his upbringing heavily impacts his artistry. He’s been releasing music since 2017 and has cultivated his sound around his raspy voice paired with unique beats. One of his biggest musical influences is Tupac, but he tells us he thoroughly enjoys Curren$y and Pharrell.
$un has thrived over the past few years and garnered a fanbase that’s stuck by him. He’s successfully led sold-out tours and survived a move to Los Angeles in 2018 that was pivotal for his artistic growth. The emcee is also a father who calls himself a philanthropist as he’s driven by a sense of cultivating community whilst creating music that speaks to his journey.
Scumbaby reintroduces Peter $un as a rapper that has organically sustained himself amid a shifty time in the fast-paced music industry. We’re on board with the Black hippie sound that $un is pushing and we’ll be eagerly waiting for what’s next from the L.A.-based artist.
