Pete Davidson Details a Short and Awkward Call with Eminem
“It went, I think, as good as it can go.”
If you’ve kept up with the current season of Saturday Night Live, you’ve probably noticed Pete Davidson‘s newly recurring impressions of Eminem on the show. During the holiday episode of this season, Davidson appeared as the Playstation-obsessed “Stu” in a spoof of the video for the rapper’s 2000 single “Stan.” And last month, Davidson reprised the Slim Shady routine to do a pretty thorough job of breaking down how NFTs work with Jack Harlow to the tune of Em’s “Without Me.”
The rapper himself delivered a cameo in the former segment. And during a recent stop at Late Night with Seth Meyers, Davidson revealed Eminem’s very brief appearance in the sketch came with an equally brief call with the rapper. “It went, I think, as good as it can go,” Davidson estimates of the interaction. The comedian described how he’d reached out to Em after hearing some the rapper’s praise for him while on set. “Eminem said a couple nice things about me and I of course heard them and I reached out. I was like, ‘I would just like to say thank you,’” Davidson said before slipping into a very loose impression of the rapper. “He was like, ‘Yeah, man, you really did that. When I saw ‘Stu’ on script, I didn’t know how it was gonna go. But after you did that, it was fire,” Davidson added in a gruff chest voice.
Back in his own head and elated for the nice words from one of his favorite rappers, Davidson moved to end the conversation as soon as the opportunity was presented. “And I was like, ‘Oh thank you so much, you’re the coolest’ and then I just hung up as quick as possible,” said the comedian.
Elsewhere in the interview, Davidson discusses his new podcast with Keke Palmer, SNL’s upcoming return from a three-week hiatus, and the controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s debut as host. “I don’t know why people are freaking out. I’m like, the guy that makes the earth better, kinda, and he makes cool things and sends people to Mars?,” Davidson asks before noting he’d absolutely board a ship to Mars if Musk asked.
