Lil Baby performed during Sunday night’s (November 22) 2020 American Music Awards. Baby, who was nominated for New Artist of the Year and Favorite Album – Hip Hop/R&B with My Turn, hit the stage to perform one of the project’s singles, “Emotionally Scarred,” but also left fans with a message to protect their mental health.
In a metallic Prada sleeveless top and matching shorts, Baby began the performance by pouring his heart out to a therapist and jotting down her observations. Another dancer joined the fray while fake fire and other pyrotechnics filled the stage with heat. The Atlanta native finished off on a raised platform with a message above reading, “Protect Your Mental Health.”
Baby lost out to Doja Cat in the New Artist of the Year category, while Roddy Ricch’s Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial took home Favorite Album – Rap/Hip Hop honors. Juice WRLD also posthumously earned the Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Male Artist award.
In addition to speaking on his upcoming albums, Young Thug joined T.I.’s ExpediTIously podcast last week where he admitted he paid Baby to start rapping.
“That nigga didn’t know who he was,” Thug said. “I used to read that young nigga’s captions on his pictures and call him like, ‘Bruh, you know you can rap.’ He in jail like, ‘Bruh, I’ma goddam get out, I’ma goddam get me some money, get me a bag and do what I need to do.’”
