Knxwledge puts his signature chop on a neo-soul classic.

This month’s edition of Bandcamp Friday has come and gone. But not without another pair of tapes from Knxwledge.

To celebrate the monthly fee-less event, the Stones Throw producer tacked on new installments of two long-running mixtape series. The first is the thirteenth volume of his VGM tapes, which hosts the producer’s explorations of obscure and classic video game scores. The other is an eight-track batch for the producer’s Hexual Sealings imprint, holding a collection of Knxw’s latest r&b edits. On the latter, the producer continues to reinterpret neo-soul, delivering a choice flip of D’Angelo‘s era-defining classic, “Brown Sugar.” For his take on the title track from D’Angelo’s 1996 debut, Knxwledge lays the singer’s vocals over glossy vibes, spacious keys, and a warm, rounded bass groove.

The tapes arrive as the producer’s monthly dispatch from the lab (the sessions from which are livestreamed almost daily on Twitch.) They also serve as potent placeholders for proper albums. Knxwledge delivered his sophomore studio outing, 1988, in April of 2020 via Stones Throw. As for NxWorries, the producer’s collaborative banner with Anderson .Paak (who is currently in the middle of a separate campaign for a joint project with Bruno Mars as Silk Sonic,) a follow-up to the group’s 2016 debut, Yes Lawd!, has been confirmed. But it’s unclear when work will resume on the sophomore NxWorries album, given .Paak’s current obligations to the Silk Sonic initiative. There are some promising signs, though. Last year, Knxw and .Paak debuted the new song, “Where I Go,” during a live virtual performance for 88 Rising’s Double Happiness Festival. On top of that, the group is on the soundtrack for this year’s NBA2k.
