Chris Rock dropped in on the final cold open of the season.

Chris Rock returned to Studio 8H last night to help Saturday Night Live close out an unconventional 46th season.

Appearing in the show’s cold open, the comedian helped the cast recall the good, bad, and ridiculous moments from a season that battled (and survived!) the production limitations of a pandemic. In front of their first full audience of the season, cast members took turns sharing the highlights and triumphs from the last seven months of creating a live sketch comedy show.

About midway through an emotional segment, Rock contextualized their glance at the finish line and celebrate it along with them. “Here’s how messed up the world was when I hosted, OK? I wanted Kanye West to be the musical guest. And he couldn’t do it because he was running for president. Remember that?” Rock noted.  “Also, the week I was here, the sitting president, who said COVID would disappear, got COVID! That was this season. Then the election is over. Heat Miser loses. Big moment for SNL. Clearly, the right time to leave, to end the season. But no, these idiots did 12 more shows. Even Jim Carrey knew it was time to go home,” the comedian added.

Last night’s season finale was hosted by Anya Taylor-Joy. Lil Nas X, who powered through a wardrobe malfunction, was her musical guest, performing the hit single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and the new song “Sun Goes Down.”
