Are Ghostface Killah and Raekwon The Next ‘Verzuz’ Matchup?
Verzuz might be returning to Shaolin.
While recapping and recovering from last night’s Verzuz event, the livestream platform’s founders may have announced a suitable follow-up to D’Angelo’s format-altering set.
Within a few hours of the broadcast, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland hopped on Instagram Live to begin the selection process for the next installment Verzuz. After running through a few cherished cuts from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and The Pretty Toney Album, Swizz seemingly settled on Ghostface Killah and Raekwon as the next matchup.
“What are we talking about?,” Swizz yells across the line before naming the two Wu-Tang Clan rappers with Ghostface’s “Run” blaring in the background. Now, that hardly confirms it. The producers have been coming with more prospective contenders than they’ve actually featured. But it’s a pretty logical pairing given the duo’s collaborative history and shared origins. It would also present an opportunity to feature the rest of the Shaolin crew, following RZA‘s appearance in the very first Verzuz showdown with DJ Premier and Method Man‘s impromptu assist with Redman during last night’s transmission. Swizz and Timbaland also discussed the initial scheme for D’Angelo’s performance, claiming Maxwell was the intended opponent for a Valentine’s Day battle.
That didn’t pan out for unspecified reasons, but the Black Messiah singer did show up in full force with a few friends. DJ Scratch opened the set with some skilled turntablism, H.E.R. dropped in to perform “Nothing Even Matters,” Meth and Red delivered their verses from “Left & Right,” and Keyon Harrold helped D’Angelo debut his first new song in two years. You can revisit the full performance here.
