Not So Italian After All: A Weekly Rap-Up
🔥8700

The Rap-Up returns to examine the most notable singles of the past week. Today, we review new work from a variety of contemporary artists as well as revisit some archival material from the titans of the industry.

Jay-Z & Kanye West, “Living So Italian”

Theoretically, a Jay-Z and Kanye West song produced by Lex Luger should be a masterpiece. In practice, “Living So Italian” serves as a fascinating relic of a specific era. Originally intended for Watch The Throne, the track features the duo leaning into Italian stereotypes over an Andrea Bocelli sample. It remains a prime example of the excess and ambition that defined that period of their careers.

Omari Lyseight, Earl Sweatshirt, and Rockitneedspace, “Square”

British producer Omari Lyseight’s debut album Digital offers a complex, digitized soundscape. On “Square,” he collaborates with Earl Sweatshirt and Rockitneedspace to create a hookless wonder that challenges traditional song structures, blending flute solos with heavy bass.

Okgutta, “War”

Pennsylvania rapper Okgutta pushes the boundaries of rage rap with “War.” The track is so heavily compressed and distorted that it creates a unique, almost alien sonic experience, proving that there is still room for innovation within the genre.

Maine CG, “Alphabets”

Maine CG brings a sense of levity to the DMV rap scene with “Alphabets.” By flipping the building blocks of early childhood education into a gritty, lyrical exercise, he manages to stand out in a crowded market.

Nori & TS7, “The_1”

North London’s Nori continues to impress with “The_1.” His signature “video game grime” style is perfectly suited for warehouse raves, further cementing the UK’s influence on the modern rap landscape.
