Kanye brought his gospel ensemble to a touching ceremony for the late DMX.

Kanye West made an unexpected appearance at DMX’s Celebration of Life memorial in Brooklyn last night.

Taking the stage with his Sunday Service choir, the gospel ensemble performed a number of their standards alongside DMX’s casket (which remained at the top of the stage throughout the ceremony,) including renditions of Soul II Soul’s “Back To Life,” The Clark Sisters’ “You Brought The Sunshine,” Whitney Houston’s “Jesus Loves Me,” and more. Rather than leading the group, West stayed incognito and exited without uttering a word during the performance. The ceremony also featured tributes from Nas, Swizz Beatz, and the late rapper’s children.

Kanye was also semi-involved in a benefit for DMX’s loved ones. Yesterday, a tributary tee designed by Balenciaga was put up for sale ahead of the ceremony, promising net proceeds would be donated to the Simmons family. According to a dedicated site for the black long-sleeve tee, West’s YEEZY brand put in a request of the Parisian fashion house. West’s attendance at the memorial came by way of a reach out from Swizz Beatz. However, it was unclear whether the rapper would show and in what capacity.

Beyond last night’s memorial, DMX and Sunday Service have a bit of history. In 2019, the late rapper led a prayer during a Sunday Service performance at Coachella. “Father please walk with us through the bad times as well as the good. May we be heard and understood from the suburbs to the hood. May you judge us by hearts and not by our mistakes. And see that we get out breakthrough however long that it takes,” said that rapper as the organs from West’s “Ultralight Beam” played.
