D’Angelo joined D-Nice on Instagram Live to discuss the performance and his new album.

D’Angelo is heading back to the stage this month for a one-off performance.

The notoriously reclusive singer jumped on Instagram Live with D-Nice Sunday night (see below) to announce a “D’Angelo v. Friends” Verzuz event. The show will be held at NYC’s historic Apollo Theater on February 27th at 8PM EST and livestreams of the performance will be held on Apple Music and Instagram simultaneously.

The set would mark D’Angelo’s first live show in more than four years. In late 2016, the singer closed out the tour in support of Black Messiah in Japan. The Apollo also happens to be where that tour commenced at the very top of 2015. Details for the Verzuz event are few and far between. However, the singer does tend to seek out some of the most revered musicians in the game to fill out his backing band. When touring Black Messiah, he was joined by Chris Dave, Pino Palladino, and Isaiah Sharky, on the road. For his performance at the NYC installment of The Roots Picnic in October of 2016, the singer was backed by The Roots in full and John Mayer.

Elsewhere in their chat, D’Angelo highlighted some of his favorite recordings from his three studio albums and ensured that another was on the way.

Earlier this year, the singer reemerged with his very own channel on Sonos Radio. In a rare interview ahead of the channel’s first broadcast, D’Angelo discussed his musical upbringing and recounted meeting Prince and George Clinton for the first time.

Watch D’Angelo announce his live Verzuz event in the clip below. And hold tight for more on the event in the days ahead.
