Featuring appearances from Bun B, Solange, Megan Thee Stallion, and more.

The late DJ Screw and his trademark production style are the subjects of the upcoming documentary, Chopped and Screwed: The Final Mixtape.

And today, a trailer has arrived for the film. Equal parts biography and examination of the half-speed edit and its impact on contemporary music, Chopped and Screwed charts Screw’s Houston upbringing, the development of his signature flip, and the ways police brutality plagued his career. The film features archival interviews with the pioneer, his peers, and members of the Screwed Up Click, as well as artist testimonies from Solange, Megan Thee Stallion, Bun B, and more. A section of the trailer also illuminates the role of George Floyd in SUC, drawing an eery connection between the abuse Screw encountered from authorities throughout his career and Floyd’s murder at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer in late May of 2020, which sparked worldwide protests against police brutality.

Chopped and Screwed is directed by Isaac Yowman, who is also at the helm of All Screwed Up, an upcoming biopic mini-series on the producer’s life. At the moment, neither project has a release date or a distributor. “This film will show the power of a man that prevailed over the adversities that blanketed his community and used his experiences to create a legacy that lives on today. Screw’s impact on southern culture is no secret, but his influence on music globally is a story untold,” says Yowman in a statement to Billboard.
