Following a lauded and decorated run at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Topaz Jones has released his new short, Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma, alongside a new album.

The surreal and loosely autobiographical film project is directed by rubberband. Clocking in at about 42-minutes, the short is composed of thoughtful vignettes and interviews with friends, family, organizers, and artists (including Black Thought.) Jones stars appears throughout the film as both an actor and subject, as do snippets of various songs from the new album. The accompanying score features contributions from Phonte, Maxo, Levan Kali, and Gabriel Garzon-Montano, with production mostly handled by Jack Hallenbeck, Allesia Beneveniste, and Jones.

Don’t Go Tellin’ Your Momma is the second album from Jones, who took his time to carefully craft and present this new chapter after dropping his debut album, Arcade, in 2016. “Now that I have a platform to tell my story, [I had] to really reckon with, well, ‘What is my story? What made me the person I am? What things about myself come from myself directly? What things are passed down from my relatives? What’s my generational trauma?,” Jones asks in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. “That was a whole lot of shit to balance out. I think that the tone of this film is equally as varied as that experience was,” he adds.
