Freddie Gibbs couldn’t resist Madlib’s new Sound Ancestors tracks.

On Friday, legendary producer Madlib dropped his latest album, Sound Ancestors. The project was composed with London producer Four Tet. Just hours after the album’s release, Madlib’s new best friend Freddie Gibbs has dropped impromptu freestyles over one of the tracks. Stream the new verses below.

Over the tracks “Dirtknock” and the previously-released single “Hopprock,” Gibbs name-drops everything from Fat Sal’s to Don Cornelius with an understandably-giddy Uber driver and fellow passenger cheering him along in the background.

At one point in the second take, Gibbs shouts out the legendary Los Angeles DJ/producer BattleCat, whose known for producing for everyone from Snoop Dogg and Tupac to Faith Evans to BJ the Chicago Kid. Maybe down the line we’ll get some material from the two.

In an interview with NPR, Madlib spoke about how the collaboration with Four Tet came to take place. Four Tet–government name Kieran Hebden–has been a friend of Madlib’s for nearly 20 years.

“Me, [Four Tet], and Floating Points [British producer/DJ Sam Shepherd], we’d always go to wine bars and just talk music,” he said.”[Four Tet and I] connected musically — he knows me, like I know him. We talked about [doing a record together] for years before we did it.”

“I work with people that I trust,” Madlib said of the collaboration. “I like their musical taste and what they do.”

When the news of Madlib collaborator MF DOOM passing broke, the two considered delaying Sound Ancestors‘ release.

“When we heard about [DOOM’s passing], it was all completely shocking,” Hebden said. “Like maybe we just need to put everything on pause for a bit. But maybe [releasing Sound Ancestors] could be quite a positive thing to happen in the middle of it. You know, Dilla’s gone, DOOM’s gone, but Otis [Madlib] is hanging in there, going strong and not giving up. He’s actually got this new album coming out and continuing to keep the spirit of all that music, that whole style where the three of them do feel like this sort of magical super-powered trinity.”

Sound Ancestors is available for streaming on all digital streaming platforms.
