Fat Joe spoke with GQ about his 2012 song “Pride N Joy” that features Kanye West, Miguel, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def, Â DJ Khaled, and Roscoe Dash.
The Bronx rapper remembers going through a grueling studio session for the song, because Kanye made him record his verse hundreds of times.Â
“It was coming right after ‘Another Round,'” Joe explained. “Rico Love had the hot pen. It was a hit, and Bink had did the beat. And then Kanye had heard it. He was like, ‘Yo, I want to do something to it, let’s work together.’ At the time, Kanye could not lose … He made me do my verses — same verse but say it over and over — maybe 300 times.”
Joe said that Ye had a problem with the way he was pronouncing the word “cul-de-sac.” In fact, the session took so long that Joe’s crew wanted to put hands on the GOOD Music founder.
“My guys wanted to beat him up,” Joe recalled. “They was, like, ‘Yo, come on, man f*ck out of here with this.’He would be, like, ‘cul-der-sac.’ He would leave, he’d come back, ‘cul-der-sac.’ I loved the finished product. I love how my verses came out … He’s a tough one.”
Ye rivals Dr. Dre when making rappers do a ridiculous number of takes. Just ask Too Short, who revealed that Dre made him say the same word repeatedly for several hours.
