A TikTok user tried to credit a white producer named Slater for the chopped and screwed sound and comedian KevOnStage was not having it.

On Thursday (August 13), Kev made a response to the young teen and gave her a quick lesson on the true originator of what she called the “slowed and reverb phenomenon,” DJ Screw.

“White people, y’all don’t know what y’all be talking about but you be confidently loud and wrong!” he began. “You really tried to gentrify chopped and screwed. I know you don’t know who DJ Screw is, but I guarantee you Slater is not the inventor of ‘slowed and reverb.’ This is called chopped and screwed. DJ Screw – Houston, Texas rest in peace – is the one who is the originator of this. You talk about originator? This was originated before you were born! I don’t know who Slater is but he is not DJ Screw.”

The legendary DJ Screw popularized the slowed-down effects on songs in the 90s as he reigned with his Screwed Up Click in Houston. Comprised of members Big Hawk, Big Moe, E.S.G., Lil Keke, Fat Pat and more, the crew would freestyle over Screw’s chopped and screwed beats for his popular Screw Tapes and created a signature sound that superstars from the likes of Drake, Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky were inspired by and use in their music to this day.

Screw passed away in November 2000 at the age of 29 following a codeine overdose. His story is set to be told later this year in his forthcoming biographical series All Screwed Up, produced by IYO Visuals with direction by Isaac “Chill” Yowman.
