Apple has acquired a Spike Jonze-directed documentary called Beastie Boys Story, which will dive into the lives of Ad-Rock, Mike D and the late MCA.

The film is set to premiere around the 26th anniversary of Beastie Boys’ No. 1 Billboard 200 album, 1994’s Ill Communication, and again reunites the surviving Beasties with Jonze who famously directed the motley trio’s “Sabotage” video.

Mike D shared an Instagram post about the film on Wednesday (January 15).

“‘Wait, what!?! I just heard that Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz made a movie about Beastie Boys and their lives growing up around a lot of crazy ass sh*t in NYC with Spike Jonze,’” the caption reads. “‘Is that for real?’ – Larry from Weehawken. ‘Yes. It is for real. It’s kind of a live documentary film, mostly filmed at our shows at King’s Theater in Brooklyn last year by Spike and we think you’re gonna love it.’ – Us.”

Inspired by the Beastie Boys Book, the film is produced by Grammy Award-winner Jason Baum, Amanda Adelson and Jonze and executive produced by Mike D, Ad-Rock, Dechen Wangdu-Yauch, John Silva, John Cutcliffe, Peter Smith, Thomas Benski, Dan Bowen, Sam Bridger, Michele Anthony, David Blackman and Ashley Newton.

A special cut of the film a will open exclusively in select Imax theaters on April 3 before dropping on Apple TV+ on April 24.

Jonze is also preparing to release a photo book called simply Beastie Boys. It’s expected to arrive on March 17 Rizzoli and feature over 200 shots taken by Jonze throughout the group’s storied career.
