On Tuesday MSNBC correspondent Ari Melber dissected the JAY-Z verse featured on “God Did,” which the rapper responded to on Twitter.

JAY-Z‘s epic 4-minute verse on new DJ Khaled song “God Did” is literally making headlines. On Tuesday (August 30) MSNBC correspondent Ari Melber broke down Hov’s verse during a segment, drawing parallels between “draconian” United States drug laws and the rap icon’s marijuana company, Monogram.

At one point, Melber explains Jay’s lyric,”I left the dope game with my record clean, huh/I turned the cocaína into champagne, huh,” referencing the rapper’s drug dealing past along with Jesus turning water into wine. Melber then nodded to the hypocrisy of alcohol being legal while marijuana sales are criminalized.

“There’s nothing automatically legitimate about wine or champagne,” Melber said. “It was criminally punished during prohibition, a policy that ultimately fueled gangs and violence, and was the only constitutional amendment ever to be reversed because both parties determined that prohibition was a messy failure.”

On Twitter, LeBron James pointed out the nearly 12-minute MSNBC news brief, which JAY-Z then responded to.

Melber also saw James’ shoutout, prompting him to referencing Jay’s “God Did” appearance again.

Jay’s “God Did” verse garnered high praise on social media since last Friday’s release of DJ Khaled’s twelfth studio album God Did. In a new reaction and breakdown video about the song, Jay’s longtime engineer Young Guru explained that the rapper did his verse in one take, also pointing out standout moments from “God Did.”
