Fat Joe is Getting Roasted for Crowning DJ Khaled “The Quincy Jones of Hip-Hop”
It seems safe to say the next Quincy Jones interview will surely be one for the books.
Yesterday, Twitter users did their weekly double-take when Quincy Jones‘ name popped up in the trending tab. At 88-years-old, many feared the worst for the legendary producer. But all were relieved to learn it wasn’t tragedy (in the conventional sense,) fueling the algorithm. Rather, Jones was blowing up on Twitter due to a case of false (and arguably unearned,) equivalence.
The stir was caused by Fat Joe, who, in a recent episode of Noreaga and DJ EFN’s Drink Champs podcast, improbably came to the defense of DJ Khaled. “People take away the greatness from Khaled and they say, ‘Well he just gets a bunch of big-time rappers and puts them on the same song,’” the Bronx rapper said. “There’s a million DJs and producers that try that, and those ain’t hit records. And it’s been a long time since we heard Nas and JAY-Z on what to me sounds like a smash hit,” the rapper adds before crowning Khaled “The Quincy Jones of Hip-Hop right now.”
Of course, this sent Twitter into a frenzy. Some attacked Joe’s credibility as a longtime Khaled collaborator, while others simply stacked their respective stats, acknowledging Jones has been nominated for 80 Grammys (winning an unthinkable 30 of them,) and was the producer of some of the best-selling albums of all time, including Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which is the only album in history to sell more than 60 million copies.
After a day of getting roasted across social media platforms, Joe refused to walk back his assertion. Instead, the rapper hopped on Instagram Live to reiterate his stance and call those who disagreed with him “backseat drivers” and “Monday morning quarterbacks,” which, even in the most liberal of applications, feels a little misused. Nonetheless, it seems safe to say the next Quincy Jones interview is going to be one for the books.
