The towering 83-song expansion of the duo’s classic 2014 album features five discs of unreleased demos, outtakes, instrumentals, and remixes.

Madlib and Freddie Gibbs cracked open the vault to deliver a “deluxe edition” of their classic collaborative debut.

Released earlier this week via Madlib’s imprint, the newly-released expansion of their 2014 project is a colossal collection of unheard outtakes, remixes, and instrumentals. Divvied up into five parts, the first disc features the original album, the second contains what is practically a full album’s worth of previously unreleased demos and beats (including the official release of “Cocaine Parties”,) the third holds the original album’s instrumentals, and the final two discs feature remixes of the album from producer Alex Goose and their instrumental versions, respectively.

In the years since Piñata‘s release, both Madlib and Gibbs have released a number of joint albums with other artists, but reunited in 2019 for Bandana, a sequel of commensurate acclaim. And if we’re to take the producer by his word, a third and potentially final MadGibbs project is already in the works. The album, tentatively titled, Montana, was confirmed by Madlib in a late-2019 interview with Gilles Peterson. Meanwhile, Gibbs is up for “Best Rap Album” at this year’s Grammy Awards with Alfredo, a 2020 collaborative album with Alchemist. The album is contending with projects from Jay Electronica (A Written Testimony,) Nas (King’s Disease,) Royce Da 5’9″ (The Allegory,) and D Smoke (Black Habits,) for this year’s crown.

There’s no date yet on the third MadGibbs installment, but there may not be a better time to revisit Piñata and all of the unreleased sketches for the album. Stream the “deluxe edition” of Madlib and Freddie Gibbs’ Piñata below and hold tight for their next transmission.
