YG is trying his best not to wallow in misery following Nipsey Hussle’s death. Over a year after Neighborhood Nip was shot and killed, YG spoke to the Los Angeles Times about his current mindstate regarding his fallen friend.

“I want to let the homie rest,” he said. “I’m not gonna fall back and just talk about bro in interviews. Not just in breath, but on my records.”

It’s an understandable position for YG, who’s not been afraid to pour his heart out about Nipsey. On his last LP, 2019’s 4REAL 4REAL, he paid homage to the late rapper on a track titled “My Last Words (Nipsey Tribute).” The spoken word cut featured his words from his slain collaborator’s memorial service.

Although YG doesn’t want to let sorrow consume him, he couldn’t really avoid it on his upcoming album My Life 4Hunnid. Considering the state of the country, the West Coast rapper admitted he felt a need to accurately reflect the current situation in America.

“I can’t come with my regulars, turnt up and lit,” he explained. “I had to go tap into that. I’m so used to being like ‘I don’t give a fuck, fuck you, boom bam.’ Now I’m like, ‘Damn, I’ve got to really go get into some emo shit.”
