Atlanta, GA – Two of R&B’s finest Brandy and Monica are taking part in the highly popular Verzuz battle series on August 31. The announcement arrived via Instagram on Saturday (August 22).

“Get ready for the queens! @Brandy and @MonicaDenise on #VERZUZ! August 31st, 8PM EST on our IG and Apple Music,” the Verzuz brand’s official account shared. “Drinks by @ciroc.”

The uniqueness of Brandy versus Monica couldn’t take place in a generic studio such as Rick Ross and 2 Chainz or the wildly popular DMX and Snoop Dogg edition of Verzuz. The two are reportedly booked to share center stage at Tyler Perry’s massive new Atlanta studio.

Since the inception of Verzuz in March, fans have beckoned and called for Brandy and Monica to celebrate their respective catalogs in the virtual arena. The veteran singers have been asked for months about whether they’d take part in a Verzuz type of battle and each one initially relented.

“I don’t know,” Brandy told Essence in May. “That would be kind of weird, who would play ‘The Boy Is Mine’ first? I don’t know.”

When asked about it herself, Monica told Atlanta’s V103’s The Morning Culture she’d be down for a celebration than an outright battle.

“I doubt it,” the “So Gone” singer told Atlanta’s V103’s The Morning Culture. “I understand the idea of it and I think it’s really entertaining and it’s an incredible idea. Now what I do like is it’s kinda turning into a celebration. I can handle a celebration. One thing that has happened my whole career is being put against someone else that I’m not even remotely similar to. I think the reality is that us being polar opposites makes it dope.”

She continued, “I tell people all the time because the only battle or Verzuz they want to see with me is me and Brandy. The reality is, people have put us up against each other for 20 something years. The reality is, I think ‘Boy Is Mine’ is such a phenomenal record because we’re polar opposites and that’s dope.”

Brandy Talks Monica Declining To Do Verzuz Instagram Battle

When Brandy heard Monica was hesitant to engage in a Verzuz-type battle, she took Monica at her word.

“I heard that she doesn’t wanna do it,” Brandy told V103 on May 18. “The last thing I heard is she pretty much turned it down, she didn’t want to be a part of that. But I understand. But I love what they’ve been doing with that platform. I think it’s just a great way to share music and celebrate. I mean the way Jill [Scott] and Erykah [Badu] did it, that’s the way to do it. Even Teddy [Riley] and Babyface, they were really just … it was great.”

With news of the two “Boy Is Mine” collaborators finally going head-to-head becoming reality, fans were not only excited, but also are rooting for absolute chaos to break out. Peep a few reactions below.
